LED lights are currently about to take over the lighting technology market by storm. Because as you know, LED bulbs are a far more energy efficient, more environmentally friendly and also a cost-saving alternative to the old conventional incandescent and CFL light bulbs. Below are 7 benefits of LED lights:
1. Energy Efficient
LED’s are the most energy efficient bulb. LEDs convert 80-90% of the energy into light. However, in incandescent bulbs only 20% of the energy is converted into light and a whopping 80% is turned into heat! LED’s also use lower amounts of electricity, approximately 60% less than traditional bulbs in our experience. As a result, you will save a huge amount on energy costs.
2. LED light bulbs have a longer life span
Due to the way that LED’s generate light, as well as their low heat levels and energy efficiency, LED’s outlast other bulbs by thousands of hours. This is because the filament on a light bulb tends to weaken overtime, which causes the bulbs to burn out. But this doesn’t happen with LED’s. Instead, they gradually decrease their light production levels by “lumen depreciation” which is a much slower process. However, this allows the bulb to last much longer. This will result in huge savings on maintenance and replacement costs because of the long LED lifespan.
3. Cost Effective
LED lights use less power (watts) per unit of light (lumen) generated. Therefore, they are not only much longer-lasting in lifespan but also lower your electricity bill. While LED’s provide 100 or even up to 200 lumens per watt; CFLs, in contrast, use about twice the amount of watts. Incandescent light bulbs use around 10X as much power with only 18-20 lumen per watts. Therefore, a LED light bulb is almost 50 times more efficient in lifespan. That means about 20 years, and 70-80% more energy-efficiency than a conventional incandescent option.
4. LED lights are non-toxic and a greener option
In addition to the compelling differences in efficiency, lifespan and therefore also electricity cost, LED lighting is also the greenest solution available in today’s markets. For instance, LEDs, in contrast to CFLs, do not contain the highly toxic mercury. Mercury is harmful not only to the environment but also to your personal health. LED lights are free of toxic materials and are 100% recyclable. Moreover, they will help you to reduce your carbon footprint by up to a third.
5. Less Heat
Incandescent bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat. Because LED lighting systems don’t radiate heat the way an incandescent or halogen light bulb does, the heat produced from the power going into the product must be drawn away from the LEDs. This is usually done with a heat sink, which is a passive device that absorbs the heat produced and dissipates it into the surrounding environment. This keeps LEDs from overheating and burning out.
6. Safety
LED lights are also much safer for your home, as they are mercury free. If for some reason a LED bulb were to break, you would not need to worry about your children, pets or even yourself coming into contact with any harmful substance. This is because they are made mostly of metal and plastic, rather than glass and a fragile filament.
7. They offer great design flexibility
LED light arrays can be placed and combined in an infinite number of ways to produce efficient – but also controllable – illumination. The color, shade, brightness and distribution of light can be controlled to perfection, which makes for not only a technically-useful lighting, but also soothing, uplifting or energizing mood lighting.
